Does anyone know who Nastia Liukin is? (or Shawn Johnson)?

Nastia Liukin is a Russian-born US gymnast who is going to compete in the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, China.

Also, anyone here know who Shawn Johnson is? She's is compared to Mary Lou Retton.

But Nastia Liukin is my favorite gymnast. So as Carly Patterson from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Any gymnast names familiar to you? Who's your favorite?

Alicia Sacramone - She's a big fan of Justin Timberlake!
Ivana Hong
Bridget Sloan

Paul Hamm
Morgan Hamm
Justin Spring
John Macready

Mohini Bhardwaj
Terin Humphrey
Kerri Strug
Amanda Borden
Jaycie Phelps
Dominque Moceanu
Amy Chou

Svetlana Khokina
Julianna McNamara
Kim Zmeskal
Mary Lou Retton

As for swimming, Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff are my heroes in the Olympics!

Kwame,

I combined your topics of Swimming and Gymnastics into one broad topic about the 2008 Summer Olympics as a whole. I think this way will see more views and conversation than if we left them seperate - because I must say - there isn't a ton of sports fans on these forums. I have a sports related job and i only know about 30% of those names.

As for the discussion itself, Phelps has a great chance to set the mens olympic record for most gold medels (Spitz better watch out)

USA! USA!

When watching the opening ceremony the ones wearing the most boring outfits will be the Dutch.

Bonuses aren't exactly a rare thing in the olympics, every country gives their medal winners bonuses. No idea where the biggest chances for the Dutch athletes are, though probably in swimming and track cycling. Well and hockey, they always win medals there, the question just is which colour.

The Opening and Closing Ceremony are usually the only thing i try to watch. Everything else going on i usually just pay attention to if i'm flicking between channels or something big could happen

The only thing i want to try and see this year is the football but theres no real surprise there

I'm more interested in the London Olympics now i'm paying for it and will most likely have to live through it

I think they got the bronze the last time, so I wouldn't count on them winning the gold. Maybe too many foreigners in the NBA these days original.gif. Though the big Chinese guy won't be in the Olympics, he's injured I believe.

The big Chinese guy (or Yao Ming) is going to do everything he can to play. I believe he will. The problem isnt the influx of foreign players in the NBA, its that the international game differs greatly from the NBA in both rules and style of play.

I will be supporting my country, Canada, but as we all know it is always winner up here so we have no chance in summer events. The 2010 winters we are hosting, so don't be suprized if we win alot.

I guess not, I doubt people know a lot of athletes that aren't from their own countries, unless they're really big.

Great news as in regards to the Olympics though, the reporters there won't be able to access the internet completely. They'll have restricted internet access just like the Chinese, hooray for censorship. Why are the Olympics in China again?

Just three more days until the opening ceremony and two more days until the Olympics start (yes, they start before the opening ceremony).

What do you think of the swimmer Dara Torres making a comeback in the Olympics? She is now 41 years old. She started representing the U.S. in the 1984 Olympics in LA. Your favorite swimmers hadn't even been born yet such as Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff, and even the movie star Lindsay Lohan hadn't been born yet! thumbup.gif

Dara Torres was only 17 years old when she competed at the Olympics. Then, Lohan's parents (Michael and Dina) were around back then when they were watching the games (before Lindsay Lohan was welcomed to the world). thumbup.gif

41 is the new 20! thumbup.gif

20 is the new teenager!

Anyway, I'm cheering for Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff!

Now, Michael Phelps is involved by international paparazzis in Beijing. Paparazzis followed him from the airport to the 'swim cube.'

I would actually say that the one race to watch in the swimming is the 100m freestyle for men, Bernard vs van den Hoogenband vs Phelps. Even though his dad is a moron who ruined one of my former classmatest pro-football career I'll be cheering for Van den Hoogenband in that one.

And why the need to bring Lindsay into this conversation? This might be a LL forum but this is the non-Lindsay area, I would think an Olympic thread should be about the Olympics.

I'm just talking about Dara Torres, which is about the oldest swimmer to compete in the Olympics. I'm saying that the swimmer Dara Torres was around competing before you fans, guys, Michael Phelps, Katie Hoff and even the movie star Lindsay Lohan were born into this world.
